Fedor sat on the sofa facing the lounge window and gazed across the Nordturm night. Mist clung to rooftops and mingled with the swirling smoke rising from chimneys as gas lamps spluttered through the darkness.

Vern took a seat between Melita and Lev and eyed the den’s old furniture. “I think it looked better before. These seats are well old.”

Lev shook his head. “Nah, mate. This feels right.” He patted the sofa’s arm, sending up a cloud of dust. “I’ve spent more than enough nights sleeping on these things.”

“Looks like it.” Vern pointed to a series of dried black splodges. “What are they?”

“They’re called stains, mate. They give it character.”

“I think Vern’s right,” Melita said. “The sofas that were here before are much nicer.”

“And cleaner,” Vern said.

Fedor turned to face the others and shrugged. “I don’t mind, either way.”

“No,” Onwyth said. “I prefer these. These are ours. They feel right.”

“It’s all ours,” Melita said. “This building. Everything in it. It belongs to us.”

Onwyth sniffed. “We might own it, but we wouldn’t have picked it, would we? Look at those.” She gestured to the drapes. “Who would pick white curtains? They’ll get mucky in no time.”

“Not if we keep them clean,” Melita said.

“And who can be bothered with that?”

Melita shrugged. “It’ll take a bit to get used to, but this is our new home.”

Onwyth folded her arms and huffed. “Doesn’t feel like it.”

“We’re starting off in a fresh place,” Melita said. “We should make an effort to keep it looking nice.”

“You can,” Onwyth said. “Or get a cleaner. There’s no way I’m going to start cleaning curtains, or whatever it is you’ve got in mind. Do I look like a maid?”

“You could. We’ve got a maid’s outfit among the disguises.”

Onwyth’s eyes widened. “You’d have me dress up and dust and polish? Do you know how long I’ve been a thief? When was the last time you did a proper job?”

Lev smiled at her. “Ah, we missed this when you were gone.”

Onwyth glared at him. “Missed what?”

“Oh, nothing. Just you being you.”

She pouted. “And what’s that supposed to mean?”

Fedor cleared his throat. “He means we’re glad you’re back. We’ve missed you.”

“Thank you, Fedor. Perhaps some other members of this crew, who I will not name, could learn a thing or two from you about how to talk to people.”

Lev laughed. “Learn from him? I taught him everything I know.”

“Maybe that’s the problem.” Onwyth held Lev’s gaze, then her scowl cracked into a smile. “I’ve missed this too.” She turned to Melita. “So, what have you been working on?”

Melita gestured around herself. “I’ve been fixing up this place. Lev and Fedor have been working on some blackmail thing and you’ve met Vern.”

“Ooh.” Onwyth’s eyebrows raised. “Blackmail. Isn’t that all a bit sophisticated?”

Lev cracked his knuckles and leant back on the sofa. “What can I say? We’re moving up in the world.”

“So, what’s the job?”

“Trust me, it’ll be too complicated for you.”

Onwyth’s glare returned. “Try me.”

“So, you know the bloke who Fedor killed?”

“Garrett?”

“No, no. The other one.
